Congress of Greek and Latin culture in Spain
A few days ago nearly three hundred professors from all over Spain came together at Mèrida to participate in the seventh annual "Days of Classical Culture" (Jornadas de cultura clasica). This conference, organized by Antonio Amador, Emilio Canales Munoz and their colleagues in the Cultura Clasica association, seeks to create a space where teachers and supporters of ancient languages and culture can better understand and discuss recent proposals in the field.
And so, on May 7th, our president Luigi Miraglia, accompanied by three young members of the Academy, Ignacio Armella, Gerardo Guzman and Ian Schildkret, made his way to the convention and gave a talk on W.H.D. Rouse, the British schoolmaster who revolutionized the teaching of classical languages at the Perse School of Cambridge at the beginning of the 20th century. The main objective of the presentation, however, was not to retell Rouse's entire life story, but rather to demonstrate some of the methods that he would employ with his students. Among many other wonderful speakers, Christophe Rico gave an especially noteworthy presentation on Polis, a book for learning the Greek koin language actively.
During the days there was also time to visit the excavations and the museum of the ancient city. (The museum itself was designed in accordance with ancient Roman architectural design!) It was an excellent opportunity to reconnect with old friends and develop new relationships. Everyone dined together Saturday evening and the following day our Academy representatives were able to enjoy a whirlwind tour of Seville before returning to Rome, taking with them happy memories of Spain and of the time spent there
